The difference between concrete and mortar
What is concrete?
Concrete is a solid material form by cement as cementing material, natural sand and stone as aggregate, mixing with water, casting and solidifying.
Concrete aggregate
The sand is call fine aggregate, and its particle size is between 0.154 and 4.75 mm. The stone is call coarse aggregate and its particle size is larger than 4.75 mm.
The aggregate accounts for 70% to 80% of the total volume of the concrete. The functions of the aggregate include: (1) Forming a strong skeleton in the concrete to reduce the shrinkage of the concrete.
(2) Change the performance of concrete. Concrete with special functions, such as lightweight aggregate concrete, radiation-proof concrete, heat-resistant concrete, waterproof concrete, etc., can be prepare by selecting appropriate aggregate varieties or aggregate grading.
(3) Good sand and gravel grading can also save the amount of cement in concrete.
What is mortar?
Mortar, or cement mortar, is a mixture of cement, sand and water. It has no aggregates, does not form a strong skeleton, and is difficult to withstand strong loads.
Use of cement mortar
In the construction project, the first is the foundation and the wall masonry, and the binder use as the block masonry material, such as the masonry stone and the red brick, the cement mortar; the second is use for indoor and outdoor plastering.
The difference between concrete and mortar
It can be easily seen from the above explanation that the cement mortar is one stone less than the concrete. At the same time, the mortar is generally “sand” and the concrete is generally “sand”. The two are different.
Strength difference
The strength of the concrete is prefix with the English initial C of the concrete. The strength of the mortar is prefix with the initial letter M of the mortar in English. The concrete strength is measured by the concrete specimen of 100mm*100mm*100mm. The cubic compressive strength was measure using a mortar test piece of 70.7 mm*70.7 mm*70.7 mm. The value after the letter is the value of the compressive strength measure for this standard cube under normal curing conditions for 28 days.
